September 21st: Project Based Learning - Using Projects as a Training Tool

Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver - Le Pavillon I and II, 791 West Georgia Street

Wednesday 5:00 - 8:00 pm

An ever increasing portion of work done by organizations is in the form of projects, requiring greater numbers of skilled practitioners, yet most research suggest that over 50% are unsuccessful. The typical corporate training model of workshop based learning has not been able to address this gap. There is growing attention from industry and academic institutions alike to utilize projects as part of the learning cycle to “grow” and improve Project Managers. Both BCIT and ASQ have successful programs that utilize this approach. Similar to a teaching hospital, both practitioner learning and productive work are accomplished. Richard will share some practical examples and lessons learned from this process.

Presenter: Richard Vurdela, BASc, MBA, MC-PR, PMP

Richard Vurdela is faculty at the BCIT School of Business, Business Operations Management and a Sessional Lecturer at the Sauder School of Business (MBA), University of British Columbia. He is Principal of IQ Systems Inc. a management consulting firm specializing in business improvement and project management. Richard is a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and the Chair of the Vancouver Section. He is a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP) with the Project Management Institute and a Principal Management Consultant (MC-PR) with RABQSA.
